The inaugural Polar Plunge at Wildcat Lake takes place Saturday, Dec. 7, at 2:00 p.m. as part of Banner Elk’s “A Small Town Christmas” weekend.
Brave participants will plunge into the chilly lake to raise funds for the Banner Elk Volunteer Fire Department and Friends of Wildcat Lake, a non-profit organization.
Plungers are asked to arrive for check-in and registration at 1:00 p.m. Pre-registration is encouraged, and those who sign up in advanced are guaranteed an event T-shirt. Pre-registration is available online at bannerelk.org or in person at Banner Elk Chamber of Commerce in downtown Banner Elk. All participants must be age 18 or older and the registration fee is $25. The rate drops to $15 for college students with valid ID. Holiday-themed “plunge costumes” are encouraged.
If the event meets its fundraising goal of $5,000, officers from the Banner Elk Police Department officers will also take the plunge. Donations can be made at https://polarplunge.funraise.org/.
The public is invited to watch the Polar Plunge, which begins at 2 p.m. Admission is free. Hot chocolate and entertainment from Welter Entertainment will be provided.
