This iconic stone building, built during the Great Depression by the Works Progress Administration, is a center for the arts in Banner Elk.
It is home to Ensemble Stage professional theater, presenting a variety of shows throughout the year in the intimate Hahn Auditorium.
Another popular attraction at Historic Banner Elk School is the BE Artists Gallery, showcasing the works of 30-plus local artists. A unique experience is the Banner Elk Book Exchange. As its name implies, it is a true book exchange that fills the library of the former school. Walk in with a book (or books) you’ve already read, and leave with the same number of books that you would like to read. No fees and no need to return the books you take.
The beautifully landscaped lawn of the historic school hosts popular events, including Art on the Greene, which takes place four weekends each summer.
